Cummins-Powered Battery Electric Bus Launches At APTA Conference

GILLIG and Cummins are charging ahead with a new all-electric bus that has benefits far beyond noise reduction and zero emissions. This new low-floor bus incorporates proven design features for exceptional quality and reliability.

Unveiled at the 2019 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) event in Louisville, KY, the new fully-electric bus drew positive comments from industry observers.

The electrified powertrain incorporates the standard six packs of batteries with a storage capacity of 444 kWh and supports charging interoperability. It includes remote diagnostic capabilities and over-the-air connectivity to Cummins Care personnel, backed by the largest parts and service network in the industry.

The bus features a direct-drive traction motor with peak torque of 3,500 Nm (2582 pound-foot) and utilizes energy recovered from a regenerative braking system to achieve a 150-mile range.

This unique vehicle sets a new benchmark in the Cummins and GILLIG partnership, which began back in the 1950s and has led the way with innovative technology over the past 70 years. Near-term expansion plans for this platform include a 35-foot version of the low-floor bus and opportunity charging. For details about GILLIG’s new battery electric bus, click here.

The 44th annual APTA International Bus Roadeo was also held in conjunction with this event. Oakland, California’s Alameda Contra Costa Transit District took top honors. See the full results here.
