Powering the Future – Cummins all-electric PowerDrive 7000ev drivetrain now available on Blue Bird’s Type C and Type D school bus models.

The Cummins all-electric PowerDrive 7000ev drivetrain is now available at Blue Bird. Matching the performance of traditional diesel-powered buses, the PowerDrive 7000ev provides fully integrated telematics and control software and reduces maintenance and fuel costs while producing zero emissions. The system is available in both the Type D All American RE Electric and Type C Vision Electric models through Blue Bird.

The PowerDrive 7000ev drivetrain complies with all relevant U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requirements and meets all applicable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification standards. Plus, the direct drive system ensures drivers can operate without a change to their driving behavior and can seamlessly switch between traditional internal combustion engine E buses and electric. The PowerDrive system is like a conventional drivetrain in that power is provided from the batteries (instead of the engine) to the traction motor (instead of the transmission) which turns the drive axle and finally moves the rear axles and tires.

The PowerDrive 7000ev provides the necessary torque, power and acceleration needed to safely and efficiently drive in typical school bus operation. With a 155 kWh total battery capacity, the system provides a driving range of up to 120 miles in most operating conditions before recharging is needed. The bus can reach a full charge in less than eight hours with a standard SAE level 2 charger; it is also compatible with automotive fast charging. The PowerDrive system provides 260 continuous horsepower (200kW) and up to 295 peak power (220kW), which is in line with the B6.7 and L9 diesel engines of today. Plus, with an estimated 25 to 34 miles per gallon equivalent and regenerative braking, the system offers excellent energy efficiency.

School districts can now experience zero-emission technology with the quality, service and support that is expected from Cummins. For more information, visit Cummins.com/electrification.
